Abstract
The importance of GIS applications in urban planning in Jordan comes as an effective means in supporting the decision-making process in relevant institutions (such as governorates and municipalities) in the field of urban expansion control using advanced technology that can deal with information, data and maps and process them with accuracy and high efficiency. On the other hand, it plays Geographic information systems applications play an important and effective role in facilitating the preparation of master plans for urban agglomerations, as these plans are considered a necessary tool to confront policies to limit the urban expansion of these agglomerations through the exploitation of lands for the purposes of building buildings and expanding residential, public and commercial neighborhoods.
The importance of modern technologies for information systems, including geographic information systems (GIS), lies in their use as an effective analytical and technical tool for planners or decision-makers, as well as those responsible for environmental management, population and resources. Perhaps the use of geographic information systems greatly reduces the cost and achieves speed in decision-making to face various and urgent urban problems, in addition to supporting the completion of plans at faster rates and high quality, thus reducing waste of energies and resources.
Geographic information systems are used in several areas in urban planning, to improve the quality of life and build sustainable communities. In addition, GIS devices have become less expensive and GIS programs have become more user-friendly.
